Custom GPTs allow you to create personalized AI models suited to specific needs. These models use documents, APIs, and your instructions to perform tasks. However, to create and use these custom GPTs, you need a ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs $20 per month. A free account won’t support this feature.
In this blog post, I’ll walk you through how to create your own custom GPT, illustrated with an example of a “smartphone specs” GPT that I created. Just follow the steps and you are good to go.
Steps to Create a Custom GPT
1. Open the Explore GPTs section and select the create GPT button at the top-right corner.
2. There are two ways to create a GPT – by chatting with the GPT builder or manual configuration.
3. Let’s take the manual configuration route.
4. Here you need to provide the name and description of your custom GPT.
5. Now comes the main part. You need to write the instructions or prompt that the GPT will use.
6. Now, you need to add conversation starters that the user can use. You can add multiple starters according to your needs.
7. You can also add any documents like PDF or Excel sheet for reference. The GPT will use them in the conversation.
8. Next is the capabilities section. If you want your GPT to search the web, enable the web browsing option. If your GPT creates images, enable the DALL-E image generation option. For coding purposes, use the code interpreter option.
9. The Actions section includes the capability to add external requests through your service. There are some examples added that you can try.
10. Click on the plus sign to add a photo for your GPT or you can tell the ChatGPT to create one for you.
11. Your GPT is ready, hit the create button.
12. There are three options. The only me option makes your GPT private and only you can see and use it. The second option creates a shareable link to the GPT, and anyone with the link can use it. The last option publishes the GPT to the GPT store where it is visible to everyone.

Monetizing Your Custom GPT
Once your custom GPT is ready, you can start making money from it. One way is to offer access through a monthly subscription. Users will pay you regularly to use your GPT.
Another way to earn money is by selling your GPTs via a one-time fee. This can be done directly through a shareable link or, once available, through the ChatGPT store. The store will provide a platform where a wide audience can discover and purchase your GPT.
